The Qatar group Ali Bin Ali Group has chosen APD to design and implement the international presentation of the new Laffan Refinery 2 (LR2) in Doha, a project that is part of the ‘Qatar Vision 2030’ National Plan to supply efficient energy to the entire country.

The presentation welcomed 400 international guests to discover the project through innovative resources such as virtual reality, a 360º immersive audio-visual show and a robotic element integrated in the staging.

ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño (APD) was selected by the Ali Bin Ali Group, one of Qatar’s most consolidated companies, for the joint presentation of the new Laffan Refinery 2 (LR2) at the Qatar National Conference Centre in Doha (Qatar).

The event was attended by approximately 400 guests, including important figures such as the Emir of Qatar, Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the country’s chief government representative; several Qatar ministers; Qatar Petroleum’s senior board of directors, headed by its chairman and CEO, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, one of the companies with greater presence in the project, together with TOTAL; shareholders and media from around the world.

For the event, APD has designed the stage and staging, the lighting design, the art direction, the creation and production of all the audio-visual content, and the supply of audio-visual equipment.

The Laffan Refinery 2 (LR2) is a Qatargas project included in the Vision 2030 Qatar National Plan to supply efficient energy to the entire country. For the presentation event, ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño carried out a “cultural engineering” intervention, with cutting edge resources that focused on the guest’s experience, to discover first hand the singularities of the project and its innovative nature.

Guests enjoyed a powerful immersive experience through the use of virtual reality goggles, through which they witnessed a 3D digitised bird’s-eye-view virtual journey through the new Laffan Refinery 2, and visited several real sections in 360º, specifically filmed in 4K ultra high definition for the ocassion.

Next, guests walked into an adjoining circular space for the public presentation of the LR2 project. This space included a built-in curved 360º screen for guests to enjoy a new and powerful immersive experience.

Using a dynamic and attractive visual language, guests had the opportunity to understand the RL2 project in depth. To this end, on-stage presentations alternated with the projection of several audio-visual productions, varying in style from documentaries, with the participation of some of Qatargas’s top directors explaining the singularities of the project and the most relevant innovations, to a more emotional and sensorial style, to reinforce the experience of the guests.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presence of the anthropomorphic six-axle PowHand robotic arm dancing a choreography with its own shadow projected on the screen. The use of this technological element, together with its perfect synchronisation with all the other multimedia systems in the event, transmitted a message of innovation and uniqueness of the Laffan 2 gas refinery to all the guests, currently the most modern and sustainable refinery in the world.

Like all ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño events, the event was carbon neutral; that is to say, the CO2 emissions linked to the event were calculated and compensated with a clean energy project, to make the final balance equal to zero.

This is the second ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño event organised for the Ali Bin Ali Group in the Middle East. In 2015, the company was responsible for the international presentation of the Katara Plaza project in Doha, a shopping, cultural and entertainment centre located in the Katara Cultural Village and which will open its doors at the end of this year.
